Austria, even as a relatively small country, successfully reached a remarkable position in the global competition.

In 2016 a new record of 141 million overnight stays was achieved, placing Austria on the

11th position in the worldwide ranking of international tourism arrivals. While within the European Union Austria ranks 6th.

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) holds the world´s biggest online collection of tourism publications and statistics, provides the tourism community with up-to-date market intelligence and compiles and disseminates tourism statistics of countries all over the world. Data and facts on international tourism are mainly drawn from the UNWTO database.

Another important data source for Tourism in the European Union (EU) is Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU.

The OECD measures tourism developments within the OECD economies.

Data on receipts and expenditure, domestic, inbound and outbound tourism, enterprises and employment as well as on international tourism consumption are freely accessible though the OECD data portal.
