Austrian Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change_NEW - now online!

Adaptation to climate change is a long-term affair. Steady knowledge enhancement and experiences in implementation are the basis for constant learning and the precondition for success.

In 2012, Austria was one of the first EU states to combine a strategic approach to climate change adaptation with a comprehensive action plan for the implementation of concrete recommendations for action.

Based on new scientific results, major findings from the 2015 progress report and current political developments, this strategy was fundamentally revised and further developed in 2016. All ministries concerned, the Federal Provinces as well as interest groups, stakeholders and NGOs were involved in the process.

The previous structure has remained unchanged. The paper comprises a strategic part (Context) and an Action Plan with concrete recommendations for action. 14 fields of activity are addressed in detail.

Climate Change Adaptation Strategy to be implemented immediately

The revised strategy was adopted by the Council of Ministers in August 2017 and acknowledged by the Conference of the Provincial Governors on 10 November 2017.

It represents the comprehensive guiding document for all of Austria’s activities concerning the adaptation to climate change.

Many decisions having long-term effects - be it in flood control or in the field of infrastructure - must be taken in a way that they provide the most detailed picture possible of trends that result from climate change already now. The Federal Government continues its support of research activities, thus deepening the scientific basis for decision-making and the successful implementation of the Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change.
