The people in Austria need areas and/or land to live, work, do business on and for recreational activities. Spatial development in Austria can thus be understood as the aggregate of measures and activities performed by the Federal Government, the Federal Provinces and municipalities as well as private players that shape and influence the area of 'Austria'.

The current Report on Land Take Reduction in Austria – drawn up with the help of experts from all Federal Provinces on the strength of their expert knowledge and issued by the Environment Agency Austria – was presented on 8 October 2019.
